Youth lacrosse starts July 12
The Blaine County Recreation District will be offering a youth lacrosse program for boys in grades 3-7 July 12-Aug. 4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7 p.m. at Nelson Field, Hailey. It will be a clinic style program open to boys of all abilities. The $55 fee includes use of a helmet, stick, gloves, ball, and instruction. The save-money early entry deadline at $30 per person is Wednesday, July 13 at 6 p.m. for The Elephant Perch's 31st annual Backcountry Run set for Saturday, July 16 at 8 a.m. from the Hulen Meadows area north of Ketchum. Those early entries will be accepted at either the Perch in Ketchum or online at active.com. Late entries on Thursday and Friday, July 14-15 are at the Perch, only, for $40 per person.
There will be no race day entries and certainly no dogs on the course. Distances offered are 16.5 miles and 10 miles. Prizes will be given to the first man and woman at each distance. Also, there will be prize drawings for the entire field. Call the Perch at 726-3497 for details.
Last July's runs attracted the third-largest field in the event's 30 years, 284 runners including 104 at the long distance and 180 at 10 miles. Winners in the 16.5-mile competition were Brad Mitchell, 40, in 1.52:41 and Joelle Vaught, 35, in 2.09:47. The 10-mile winners were Chase Caulkins, 18, in 57:41 and Morgan Arritola, 24, in 1.03:21. Course records at 16.5 miles are Paul Lowe (1999) in 1.43:35 and Cori Mooney (2003) in 1.58:47, and, at 10 miles, Noah Hoffman (2008) in 55:14 and Johanna Olson (2004) in 1.02:21.
Men's State Amateur Golf July 15-17 in Victor
The Idaho Golf Association is seeking entries for its 83rd IGA Men's State Amateur Championship tournament set for Friday through Sunday, July 15-17 at 7 a.m. daily at The Headwaters Club at Teton Springs Resort. That is located at Victor in eastern Idaho, 20 miles west of Jackson Hole, Wyo. The Gem State's top amateur golfers will compete in a 54-hole stroke play championship. Call 208-342-4442 for details.
