Volunteers needed for Mountain Bike nationals
Breakaway Promotions and Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau are seeking volunteers for the 2011 USA Cycling National Mountain Bike Championships July 14-17. Sun Valley will host riders and top pros from all over the U.S.
Volunteers are needed beginning Monday, July 11 through Sunday, July 17 in positions ranging from trail crew, construction crew, registration, media, athlete support, and hospitality. Each position lasts between 3-5 hour shifts and will be located on Baldy or downtown Ketchum. Positions are filled in a first-come, first-served basis. Dollar Mountain trail run is Saturday
Race director Brad Mitchell is planning his second Dollar Mountain 10-kilometer (6.24-mile) trail run for Saturday, June 25. Last year's event featured 60 runners finishing the technical course that features 3,400 feet of elevation change.
The race starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at The Community School's central lawn area in Sun Valley. Pre-race briefing is Saturday at 7:50 a.m. preceded by race day registration ($40) from 7-7:45 a.m. on the school quad. NHL scout/coach Raeder shares tips with kids
Former National Hockey League scout/coach Cap Raeder visited Sun Valley over the June 11-12 weekend to teach a group of young hockey goalies from Sun Valley, Salmon and Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Raeder played college hockey for the University of New Hampshire and, in 1973, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League and WHA Hartford Whalers. After his playing career he was head coach at Clarkson University in New York. In 1988 he joined the staff of the NHL Los Angeles Kings.
For the last 20 years he has been an NHL coach and scout and has run a series of successful goalie clinics across the U.S.
Raeder's Sun Valley Goalie School was organized for the second year by the non-profit group, The Suns Foundation, and sponsored by Zenergy Health Club and Spa and the Sun Valley Skating Center.
The camp involved three days of on-ice goalie instruction with Raeder and included other hockey players that participated as shooters and worked with local skating/ hockey skills coach Dawn Peterson of Ketchum.
Goalies and shooters received valuable specialized instruction on technique, strategy and philosophy of the game. The five goalies also participated in a strength and conditioning session at Zenergy, led by trainer Yvette Hubbard.
Goalie participants were Dehner Figge, Tripp Hutchinson, Willis Sanchez, Rowdy Smith (Jackson) and Logan Warren (Salmon).

Wilander 2-2 at Summer Sectional tennis in Denver
Incoming Wood River High School senior Karl Wilander won his first two matches and finished 2-2 in the Boys' 16 Singles division of the Intermountain Tennis Summer Sectional Championships June 14-19 at Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo. The largest junior tennis meet in the U.S. Tennis Association's Intermountain Section attracted over 750 junior players from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Nevada for singles and doubles in eight age classes.
Sun Valley resident Wilander, the Idaho State 4A boys' singles runner-up in May, was the No. 16 seed out of 80 players in Boys' 16 Singles. After a bye, he defeated Meridian's Vishnu Iyer 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 and won 6-2, 6-3 over Ozzie Tavares of Las Vegas in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, No. 5 seed David Mitchell of Castle Rock, Colo. defeated Wilander 6-2, 6-1. Mitchell finished up winning all six of his matches including the championship over No. 3 seed Brendon Kempin of Sandy, Utah 6-2, 7-6. Wilander was ousted in consolation action 6-1, 6-1 by Creel Smith of Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Wilander partnered with Michael Weaver of Ketchum in Boys' 16 doubles. They went 1-1, winning an 8-0 pro set over a Colorado pair and then falling 8-3 to a third-seeded Colorado pair. Weaver won once in Boys' 16 singles and lost split-set matches to Iyer and Tavares.
Free tennis camp for kids at Harker Center
Kids ages 6-13 are invited to a free tennis camp June 30-July 1 at The Harker Center courts in Elkhorn. Reservations are required. On Father's Day, June 19, Robert Honey aced the 135-yard No. 4 West hole at The Valley Club using a 7-iron. Witnesses were Vic and Sara Carlson and Marianne Honey.
Youth lacrosse starts July 12
The Blaine County Recreation District is offering a youth lacrosse program for boys in grades 3-7 July 12-Aug. 4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7 p.m. at Nelson Field, Hailey. It is a clinic style program open to boys of all abilities. The $55 fee includes use of a helmet, stick, gloves, ball, and instruction. Equipment must be returned when the program ends. Swim lessons in Hailey
Hailey's Blaine County Recreation District Aquatic Center is offering a series of two-week swim lesson sessions with trained, qualified instructors who are at least 16 years of age.
Give your child the skills they need for lifetime enjoyment of a sport that offers low-impact and great aerobic exercise. The next session runs June 27-July 7 with 30-minute classes at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Cost is $42 per child. Ski Club bike ride June 30
Biking enthusiasts are invited to join the Sun Valley Ski Club for its first summer bike ride to Hailey. It is Thursday, June 30 meeting at the north end of the St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center parking lot at 9:45 a.m. The ride begins promptly at 10 a.m. Bring water, keep an eye on the weather and layer accordingly. Road bikes and mountain bikes are welcome. Lunch will occur at the Powerhouse in Hailey. If time permits, participants will continue to ride to Bellevue via Broadford Road, then back to Ketchum along the bike path. All abilities are welcome. State rodeo wraps up in Pocatello
Blackfoot-area cowgirl Shelby Freed successfully defended her State High School Rodeo girls' all-around title and won the top prize of a saddle Saturday, June 18 at Bannock County Fairgrounds, Pocatello.
Freed piled up 150.5 points during the June 11-18 competition and out-distanced runner-up Darby Fox of Glenns Ferry (118) in the 28-cowgirl field. Fox was the 5th District girls' all-around champion this spring.
By finishing in the top four in their events at state competition, Freed (2nd goat tying, 3rd breakaway roping) and Fox (3rd polebending, 2nd barrel racing) qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals July 17-23 at Gillette, Wyo.
Wood River High School incoming senior Haillie Taylor ended up finishing 15th in the overall race at state with 49 points. Her best event was girls' cow cutting, placing ninth of 17 cutters with 23.5 points. She was 17th in polebending, 14 points.
One of Taylor's top moments at state came in breakaway roping during the June 14 evening session. She posted the best time of the session with a lightning-fast 3.44 seconds. Earlier in the day, eventual state overall winner Freed clocked a 2.31-second time in breakaway.
CSI Firecracker Fun Run June 30
Runners and walkers will celebrate the Independence Day holiday a little early Thursday, June 30 with the College of Southern Idaho's Firecracker 10-kilometer and 5k runs starting at 7:30 p.m. on the CSI campus in Twin Falls. Late registration for the evening event occurs from 5:30-6:45 p.m. There will be a barbecue right after the race for families and participants. Wood River volleyball fundraising tournament Aug. 6-7
Former Albertson College volleyball star and Community School coach Kristyn Rutland has scheduled the first annual Wood River Volleyball Club (WRVBC) tournament fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6-7 at Nelson Field in Hailey. All players are welcome for the doubles action, Open or Recreational. A youth clinic will be held each day, with men's, women's and high school competition Saturday and reverse coed play Sunday. Sign-up for Lyle Pearson 4th of July Tennis Championships
Sun Valley Tennis Club will once again host the Lyle Pearson 4th of July Tennis Championships Saturday through Monday, July 2-4. Tournament director David Perry (877-799-4377) said the three-day U.S. Tennis Association Intermountain tourney has the largest purse in the Gem State, offering prize money in the Men's Open and Women's Open divisions. All participants will receive complimentary Sun Valley Ice Show tickets, and be invited to the Player's Party on Sunday, July 3. Non-USTA players may enter, since all divisions (3.5 to 5.0, and 7.0-9.0 mixed) are non-sanctioned, with the exception of Open classes. Entries close Tuesday, June 28.
