Berry, Hovey lead Smoker bikers at Soldier

Knobby Tire Series distance races

Sun Valley road cyclist and mountain biker Josh Berry is making a name for himself for the RealCyclist.com Pro Team this year. He's an Olympic hopeful. He's traveling the country out of Portland, Ore.

Berry had a break in his road racing schedule last week and made the most of it with some local mountain biking.

Last Saturday, Berry was one of 106 Gem State mountain bikers at the Knobby Tire Series event called the Soldier Mountain Smoker cross-country race. And Berry won the 23-mile Pro Men's Category 1 race by nearly 10 minutes.

He won in a course record 1.49:23 over Pocatello's Ryon Butterfield (1.59:20).

Women's winner on the long course was Brooke Hovey in a course record 2.21:04. The event was a qualifier for the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross Country National Championships July 11-17 in Sun Valley.

Race organizer Marc Driver said, "We had a real good turnout and a lot of good and impressive efforts. Weather conditions were great, a little overcast and cool. It rained only after all the racing was done."

The fifth of five 2011 Knobby Tire Series events is the annual Galena Grinder/Whit Henry Memorial scheduled for Saturday, July 23 at Galena Lodge.
