A lifetime of achievement and civic contribution has earned Sun Valley City Council President Dewayne Briscoe an award from his Seattle high school.
The Garfield Golden Grads Hall of Fame Committee selected Briscoe as Garfield High School graduate of the year for 2011. The committee chose Briscoe from a field of nominees.
"I guess it was a combination of professional organizations, government organizations and community organizations," Briscoe said.
He has been president of the Washington State Dental Association; president of the Western Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; speaker of the House of Delegates for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; president of the Bellevue, Wash., Rotary Club; and president of the board of the Seattle Boys & Girls Club. He also was president of his graduating class at Garfield High School.
Briscoe said his high school was known as "the little United Nations."
"It was a tremendous experience," he said. "We were very diverse."
Briscoe will travel to Seattle for the June 18 award ceremony.
"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "I'm pretty proud of that."
