Rusch, BCRD to offer “Wheel Girls”

Mountain bike club rides this summer

Sun Valley professional mountain bike racer Rebecca Rusch has joined forces with the Blaine County Recreation District to offer a six-week mountain bike clinic this summer for girls in grades 8-12.

It's called "Wheel Girls." And it will be the only mountain bike club for girls in the Wood River Valley.

The six-week club ride sessions are due to begin Tuesday, June 21 and will be held each Tuesday from 2-3:30 p.m. on the Ketchum Ranger District trails. Depending on interest, some weekend rides may also be available. Cost is $125.

Rusch is the reigning and two-time Lifetime Fitness Leadville Trail 100 women's winner as well as being the three-time 24 Hour Solo Mountain Biking world champion. She has been a professional athlete since 2001 and has a wide array of skills—paddling, rock climbing, biking, navigating, skiing and others.

She and other local female riders will teach basic mountain bike skills, bike maintenance, trail etiquette, nutrition and fitness principles to local young women. The program is designed for those who know how to ride a bike, but who want to gain skills and confidence to ride more.

Girls will be encouraged to participate as riders or volunteers in the U.S. Cycling National Mountain Bike Championships in July at Sun Valley.

Rusch said, "We have so many strong, athletic girls in the Wood River Valley and a network of world-class trails. My inspiration to create 'Wheel Girls' comes from watching the development of many of our local athletes. I have the desire to share my race and riding experience with them. I hope this is just the beginning of a lifetime of cycling for these girls."
