Arritola, Jones-Wilkins are half marathon champs

Nice morning for a 13.1-mile run

Community School Head of School Andy Jones-Wilkins, 43, and U.S. Nordic Olympian Morgan Arritola, 25, were the winners by a wide margin of Saturday's seventh annual Sun Valley 13.1-mile Half Marathon.

Sunny and warm weather conditions greeted a record field of 263 half marathoners on Saturday's bike path course that rambled through Elkhorn, Ketchum and Sun Valley. That's a field of 101 more than the same event had in 2009.

Jones-Wilkins (1.22:25) repeated his half marathon win and improved his finishing time by 61 seconds. He was a winner by 47 seconds over Hailey's Zach Burney, 19, (1:23.12) and third-place Kevin Tuck, 55, of Salt Lake City, Utah (1.23:20).

Placing fifth overall was Arritola (1.25:17), nearly 12 minutes faster than second-place Shannon Deboer, 24, of Boise (1.37:04) and third-place Ashley Rendahl, 22, of Hailey (1.38:33).

The Scott Sport-sponsored King and Queen of the Mountain went to last year's winner Pedro Morales and Morgan Arritola, both winning a pair of Scott running shoes for being the first male and female to crest Elkhorn hill and finish the entire race distance.

Race director Brad Mitchell said the 2012 Sun Valley Half Marathon is scheduled for next June 2 and will see the return of the two-person relay and a corporate challenge.
