Success on the international ice hockey stage was celebrated locally as the city of Sun Valley presented honors to native daughter Hilary Knight.

During a City Council meeting last Thursday, Sun Valley Mayor Wayne Willich presented Knight with a key to the city and read a proclamation declaring May 19, 2011, Hilary Knight Day.

"We're so proud to have you here living in the city," Willich told a smiling Knight.

Knight, 21, scored the winning goal for Team USA for a 3-2 overtime win against Canada in the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation's World Women's Championship gold medal game last month in Switzerland. It was the U.S. team's third straight world title.

Knight's mother, Cynthia Knight, told the Idaho Mountain Express that the family couldn't be more proud.

"It's amazing being her parent," she said. "We're delighted she can represent Sun Valley."

Cynthia Knight said her daughter will "pop in and out" of the valley as she continues to train and play domestically and internationally. As far as future plans, she said, Knight hopes to go to the 2014 Olympics and to be an advocate for issues that are important to her.
