Wood River gets another football game

Get ready for some football!

Hailey's Wood River High School will have two varsity football games before the start of the 2011-12 school year.

For the coming season, the Wolverines coached by Kevin Stilling have nine games on their regular-season schedule—five at home—with the possibility of playing a tenth if Wood River makes the playoffs.

Two of the nine games, both at home at Hailey's Phil Homer Stadium, will occur before Wood River students start classes for the new school year on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

4A Wood River hosts 3A Sugar-Salem of Sugar City on Friday, Aug. 26 and entertains 3A Buhl on Friday, Sept. 2 as part of Labor Day weekend.

Next are two non-conference road games against 2A schools—at Wendell Sept. 9 and at Gooding Sept. 23.

Wood River opens its Great Basin Conference schedule at home against the Jerome Tigers Friday, Sept. 23, then travels to Minico Sept. 30.

On back-to-back weekends the Wolverines host Twin Falls Oct. 7 and Burley Oct. 14. The regular-season closes in Twin Falls at Canyon Ridge Oct. 21.

Three of the six Great Basin Conference teams make the Oct. 28 playoffs.

Attempting to add Sugar-Salem to its season schedule, Wood River petitioned the Idaho High School Activities Association for a tenth football game during the 2011 season. The request was approved during the April 6 IHSAA board of directors meeting in Boise.

Other schools allowed to play tenth games in the board action were Canyon Ridge, Hillcrest of Idaho Falls, Middleton, Minico, Rocky Mountain and Vallivue of Caldwell.
