A young team of Community School Cutthroats is headed back to the State 3A prep tennis tournament Friday and Saturday, May 20-21 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
This is the Sun Valley independent school's 28th year of fielding a tennis team, and its 27th visit to state competition.
Fourteen of the 18 Cutthroat players who competed in last Friday's 3A District 4/5/6 tournament at Sun Valley Tennis Club have qualified for the upcoming state meet sanctioned by the Idaho High School Activities Association.
Of that number, five state qualifiers are freshmen, three are sophomores, five are juniors and only one is a senior.
And only five players are returning to state from last year in Caldwell when the Cutthroats won the State 3A boys' championship—seventh state team title in school history.
What it means is the Cutthroats because of their inexperience will once again have their hands full going up against the likes of the Parma Panthers, winners of four straight girls' state team titles.
But coach Phil Huss' Cutthroats got their feet wet Friday in dominating their district tournament by a healthy 149-63 margin over second-place Sugar-Salem of Sugar City.
It was Sun Valley's seventh straight district tourney team win and 13th title in 14 years.
The Cutthroats swept singles' honors with top-seeded junior Tim Kanellitsas and senior Emma Wilander. The home team also won boys' doubles with juniors Colin Waycott and Gray Riedinger, and girls' doubles with juniors Gabi Perenchio and Morgan Atkinson.
Freshman Chloe Chrysikopoulos earned the unofficial award for "best college try" when she battled through a sprained ankle and managed to upset top-seeded Carly Grant of Sugar-Salem 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the girls' singles semi-final.
Because of the injury Chrysikopoulos was unable to continue in the girls' singles final which Wilander captured by injury default.
The other second-place finish was in mixed doubles with freshmen Reed Roudabush and Chloe Francois.
Placing third and also earning state berths were sophomore Zach Lindahl in boys' singles, sophomores Taylor Figge and Paige Riedinger in girls' doubles, and freshmen Taylor Adler and Nick Wright in boys' doubles.
