Cutthroat runners make their mark

The Northside Conference track and field championships crowned familiar team win-ners—Camas County girls and Carey boys—Wednesday on sunny and mild day at Carey's Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

Led by the 40-point individ-ual effort of junior Katelyn Pe-terson, the Musher girls from Fairfield captured their fifth straight Northside title. The deep Carey boys won the con-ference crown for the fourth time in five years by 12.5 points over defending champ Camas.

The Camas girls out-distanced the runner-up Carey girls 64-34 in the field events to account for their 30-point win-ning margin. The Carey girls won three of the four relays paced by their sprint medley team of Angelica Zarate, Lilly Rivera, McKayla Mecham and Micaela Adamson, who posted the state's second-best 1A time.

But runners from The Community School of Sun Val-ley led by sophomore sprinter Ellie Swanson served notice they'll be contenders when State 1A berths are settled May 11-12 at Jerome High School.

Swanson, who has scored 40 goals in two seasons for the Cutthroat girls' soccer team, stepped it up and finished a close second in the 100-meter, 200m and 400m dashes Wednes-day. She had a marvelous an-chor leg to spark the Cutthroat victory in the 4x400m relay.

Camas County's Peterson won the 100m dash, 300m in-termediate hurdles, high jump and triple jump. The boys' high-point winner during the nine-school meet with 32.50 points was Castleford senior Kale Weekes, who swept the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints.

Other individual stars in-cluded Richfield's Sasha Kent, who swept the 800m, 1600m and 3200m runs. Carey's Joe Laid-law (300m intermediate hur-dles) and Jacy Baird (long jump) were winners. Camas County's Airik Donohoe had the 3200m race of his life in nipping teammate Bryan John.

Carey junior Adamson cap-tured the girls' 400m dash. The Panther boys' 4x200m relay posted the state's top time of 1:36.00 with Jack Cenarrusa, Lynn Mecham, Laidlaw and Baird. Carey's winning 4x400m relay of Shane Bingham, Ce-narrusa, Baird and Laidlaw now has the third-best time.
