The Hailey Tree Committee will go all out this Saturday in celebration of Arbor Day with tree-planting demonstrations, free tree seedling offers, live music, food and drink.
The celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hop Porter Park on East Bullion Street. Smokey the Bear will be on hand to welcome kids to the bouncy forest. Forest rangers will answer questions about trees, and Dr. Tom's Alchemy will play music.
The event is a collaboration between the Hailey Tree Committee and the Ketchum Community Forestry Division. The two cities have been working together over the past year to inventory and protect trees in the cities' "urban forests."
The first Arbor Day celebration, organized by journalist J. Sterling Morton, took place in Nebraska City, Neb., on April 10, 1872. An estimated 1 million trees were planted that day. Over the last 140 years, many million more trees have been planted by tree committees in towns and cities across the United States on Arbor Day.
"Arbor Day is about celebrating trees and all they do to provide shade and protect us from the wind and preserve the environment," said Hailey Tree Committee Chair Bill Josey.
