Obama’s ‘serious business’ done

Now the world knows what was on President Obama's mind when he appealed for an end to the "silliness" in petty domestic politics and for more attention to the "serious business" of the nation.

As disgraceful Republican politicians and their support system of oddballs wallowed in birth certificate nonsense, the president and a handful of his security team sweated out elaborate plans for capturing the world's most murderous terrorist, Osama bin Laden, for nine months.

Nine months! Repeat that and consider the burden that secret imposed on the president day and night.

Yet, while the raid on bin Laden's hideout, now characterized by professionals as incredibly difficult and masterfully executed, was being pieced together and rehearsed, President Obama was poised, calm and unflappable, despite hideous personal insults and obscene catcalls—and furthermore continued to manage other stressful issues that a president cannot avoid.

The magnitude of the bin Laden operation and the weighty decision to "Go!" required of the president provides an inspiring contrast to the humiliating behavior of right-wingers who spent days questioning his integrity, truthfulness, patriotism and ability to make agonizing decisions.

Republicans who planned on gliding into the Oval Office acting like carnival showmen, and using poorly concealed code phrases to belittle President Obama's race as somehow beneath the presidency, are cooked.

The GOP must now find adult, serious voices.

If that's possible.
