Taylor inches ahead in barrel racing totals

Third rodeo staged at Gooding

Three rodeos are in the books for 5th District high school cowboys and cowgirls after last weekend's stop at Gooding County Fairgrounds. Up next: A visit to Shoshone's Lincoln County Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday, May 6-7.

Wood River High School junior Haillie Taylor enjoyed a 17-point weekend in the event and inched ahead of Shoshone's Shiann Williamson 45-44 in the barrel racing standings last weekend on the Gooding dirt.

Taylor posted a fourth-place 18.304-second time in Friday's first go-round, then the local cowgirl ran away with first place in Saturday's second go-round with a winning 18.159-second clocking for 10 points.

She also picked up 10 points in goat tying, six in polebending and two in breakaway to solidify her hold on third place in the girls' season standings. Taylor has 125 points after her 35-point weekend in Gooding.

The girls' leaders are Darby Fox of Glenns Ferry with 177 points (52 at Gooding) and defending girls' champion Valene Lickley of Valley with 149 (56 at Gooding). For all her efforts at Gooding including a first-go breakaway roping win, Lickley cut her deficit to Fox by only four points in the overall.

Leading the men after three rodeos is Brogan Bennett of Gooding (110 points, 36 at Gooding). Making the biggest move was Gooding's Jared Parke, who gained 46 points to move into sole possession of second place with 88 points. Parke added 19 on calf roping alone.

After Shoshone, here is the district schedule, all Friday rodeos 7 p.m. and Saturday evenings 5 p.m.: May 13-14 at Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey; and district finals Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 28 at noon in Shoshone. State high school rodeo is June 14-18 in Pocatello.
