In the words of Tom Hanks' character in the movie "Big," "I don't get it."
Where do the mayor of Hailey and City Council members Don Keirn and Fritz Haemmerle get the right to give away our money (likely $1.5 million to $2 million) to the developers of Old Cutters subdivision? There are five pages of foreclosure notices in the Mountain Express every week where real families in our community are facing drastic times. Can our city leaders give some of our money to those families too?
Hailey was the creditor in first position, ahead of even the bank. That asset was owned by the city and by extension the people of the city. And our city leaders just gave it away for pennies or dimes on the dollar because ... why? They felt sorry for the developer? Well, what about those five pages of foreclosures?
This is something I would expect of the federal government. For some reason, the giveaway is more distasteful when it's my hometown officials doing the government giveaway, err "stimulus."
