Wood River Valley mountain bikers got out their bikes and traveled to the Treasure Valley south of Nampa for Saturday's 16th annual Barking Spider Bash, season-opening race of the 2011 Wild Rockies (wildrockiesracing.com) series.
Category 1 men and women, Pros and Single Speed went three laps of the nine-mile lap course, or 28 miles. Category 2 riders went two laps or 18 miles, and Category 1 cyclists covered one nine-mile lap.
The Barking Spider Bash was a qualifier for the USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike national championships July 14-17 at Sun Valley. The event organized by Breakaway Promotions includes Olympic-style cross country, short track cross country and Super D.
All categories of racers will duke it out on the trails of Sun Valley for Stars-and-Stripes jerseys. Sun Valley will act as the host venue for both the 2011 and 2012 national bike races.
"I have traveled the world and the U.S. for races and I live in the Sun Valley area because it has some of the best trails I've ever ridden as well as welcoming cycling community," said three-time 24-Hour Mountain Bike World Champion Rebecca Rusch. "I know this place is world-class and I'm really looking forward to sharing what Idaho has to offer with the best cyclists in the U.S."
