During the past two weekends, 20 girls and one boy from Wood River Gymnastics teams competed in the Idaho State Gymnastics Championships.

The girls competed with 21 other teams and about 600 gymnasts in Boise March 25-27. Meeting Saturday, March 19 in northern Idaho at the town of Hayden north of Coeur d'Alene, the boys' meet was smaller with 12 teams and 100 kids.

Kaiden Minnick of Wood River Gymnastics Academy (WRGA), the only boy traveling to Hayden, successfully de-fended his title of Idaho Level 4 state boys' vault champion.

Minnick did well in his other five events, too. He placed fourth in floor and high bar, fifth on rings, seventh on paral-lel bars, eighth on the pommel horse and sixth in all-around.

The WRGA girls' teams have been stricken by illness the past few weeks, but most of the gymnasts were still able to compete. Not having as much training in the weeks prior to state and not having all their strength back, the girls were still able to get some of their best scores of the season and finished in good standing.

Andrea Minnick of WRGA said, "The teams from Wood River Gymnastics Academy will now have some time off until they compete again. The Idaho Gymnastics board just approved a fall competition season, so WRGA athletes will begin competing earlier and will have two seasons."
