Super giant slalom racers kick off the Parrish

Rixon, Fitzgerald collect speed wins

Carl Rixon Jr., 28, and Jordan Fitzgerald, 15, were clearly the fastest down the hill in Sunday's Lane Parrish Memorial and New Diamond Sun super giant slalom races on Baldy's Greyhawk ski run.

The field of 65 racers was down nearly 50 from last year's Parrish Memorial SG. In the Parrish preliminary run, Fitzgerald was .24 seconds quicker than Samantha Busby, 13, while Rixon was 1.21 seconds faster than Harlan Collins, 17.

Later, the New Diamond Sun took the top 15 men and five women from the preliminary run and gave them another heat. This time, Collins narrowed the gap on Rixon but still trailed by 1.12 sec-onds. Fitzgerald stretched her advantage to .56 seconds over Busby.

Sunday's SG was the first of the three-day, 19th annual Parrish event that challenges skiing skills in three disciplines—halfpipe, moguls and SG. It's named after Lane Parrish, a speed and bump skier and movie stuntman who died at age 33 in a plane crash near Twin Falls in 1990.

Other Parrish races are today, Friday, April 1 (halfpipe on Baldy) and Saturday, April 2 (bumps on Brick's Island).

Any money raised goes to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Freestyle Team and the Soldier Mountain downhill. There is one "combined" category this year (all 3 events, SG, HP and M).

Listed are Sunday's SG racers ranging in age from 8 to 81, their finishing times in seconds and hundredths:
