Bald Mountain's lifts will soon slip into spring slumber as the Sun Valley ski season draws to a close on Easter afternoon, April 24, but the season won't be culminating as usual.

This coming Monday, March 28, will kick off Ski Heritage Week, jointly presented by the International Skiing Heritage Association and U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, in partnership with the local Ketchum-Sun Valley Historical Society's Heritage & Ski Museum. Events and parties beckoning back to earlier Sun Valley days are planned for the entire week.

However, the week was built around one event—the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

"We take the show on the road every year for this signature event," said Hall of Fame Chair Bernie Weichsel.

Weichsel said few people go to the museum in Ishpeming, Mich., so it made sense to bring the induction ceremony to skier hotspots. Last year was Beaver Creek, Colo. He said the Hall of Fame chose Sun Valley this year because of the inductees. Two of the six inductees—Sun Valley Resort owner Earl Holding and Paralympic skier Muffy Davis—began their careers in the skiing industry here in Sun Valley. Other inductees are former U.S. Ski Team racers Daron Rahlves and Bobby Cochran, as well as big-mountain skiers Glen Plake and the late Shane McConkey.

The induction ceremony and dinner on Saturday, April 2, at 6 p.m. in Sun Valley Inn's Limelight Room requires registration and payment to attend, costing $250 per person. But the event has been sold out. Weichsel said capacity is about 500 people. The week's other formal events—many of which are dinners—require buying an access pass, but those have also sold out.

However, several events are free and open to everyone, including the Ishpeming Film Fest, showing historic skiing films and new productions every day in the Sun Valley Opera House (see the sidebar for the film schedule). Noteworthy films include the breakthrough 1931 German film "Der Weisse Rausch," meaning "White Ecstasy." The black-and-white film is part of New York's Museum of Modern Art's film collection. A film that Sun Valley can relate to is the freestyle flick "Performers," made in 1971. The film follows several Sun Valley locals and others, the K2 demo team, as they tour the country. They began their tour in Sun Valley with a wet-T-shirt contest.

In honor of the K2 Performers, Whiskey Jacques' saloon in Ketchum will hold a ladies T-shirt contest and men's cheeseburger-eating contest on Thursday, March 31. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the party starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes two raffle tickets—1970s attire encouraged. Contestants must sign up at Whiskey's by 8 p.m. March 30.

The week's other rambunctious event is Apple's Après Street Party on April 1 from 3-7:30 p.m. There will be live music, a hotdoggers tent and the same raffle to benefit the Bald Mountain Rescue Fund. Prizes will be offered by K2, Smith Optics, Scott, Eddie Bauer and other manufacturers.
