It's an excuse to drink, wear green and pretend or not to be Irish. St. Patrick's Day is a celebratory day that few people choose to ignore in the Wood River Valley, especially since there are live music and other events to enjoy.

Those on Baldy on Thursday, March 17, can enjoy drink specials at all Sun Valley Resort mountain lodges. In addition, there will be live music at Warm Springs from 2-5 p.m. with the Doug Allen Band. At River Run Lodge, from March 17-20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., test drive the new BMW X3 and enter to win a new pair of K2 skis. In addition, with every test drive there will be an opportunity to demo a pair of K2s.

At Whiskey Jacques' in Ketchum, celebrate St. Patrick's Day with live music by Old Death Whisper. Show begins at 8 p.m. Other live music will take place at the Silver Dollar in Bellevue with Baseline Road at 9 p.m. Also in Bellevue, enjoy live music at The Brickhouse with Cow Says Moo at 7 p.m. The Brickhouse will have Irish dinner specials as well.

Spend St. Patrick's Day with The Vuarnettes at the Sun Valley Resort Boiler Room on Thursday, March 17, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. The Boiler Room offers a full bar and appetizer menu for all shows. For details, call 622-2148.

The weekend will be full of other activities, too. Take part in the third annual Poker Run on Bald Mountain. Registration is at 10:30 a.m. at Apple's. Teams of four will gather cards at destinations around Bald Mountain. The first card will be drawn at Apple's. The team with the best hand wins. The winning team will be awarded at Apple's street party, which will have live music from 3-7 p.m. The Poker Run is $5 per person or $20 per team.

Other live music around the valley will take place today, March 16, with Jerry Joseph and the Jack Mormons at 9 p.m. and on Saturday, March 19, with Old Man Markley at 10 p.m. at Whiskey Jacques'. At the Silver Dollar on Friday, March 18, DJ Marlene spins tunes at 9 p.m.
