Firemen rescue drowning dog

Golden Lab pulled from icy water in Elkhorn

The Sun Valley Fire Department rescued a golden Labrador retriever last week that had fallen into an icy pond near Black Birch Drive in southern Elkhorn.

Sun Valley Assistant Police Chief Mike Crawford said the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, when the animal apparently wandered onto the ice and slipped in.

Crawford said a small group of spectators was at the pond when police arrived. Uncertain of the thickness of the ice, the police and spectators began to formulate a plan to rescue the animal when the Fire Department arrived.

Crawford said a firefighter wearing a cold-water wetsuit calmly walked onto the ice, reached down and pulled the animal from the water.

"It was a young dog—it looked like a puppy," Crawford said. "It was running around thanking everybody like it knew what was going on and was glad to be out of the water."
