Locals ready for Sammis/Camas Cup downhill

Tuesday at Soldier Mountain

Local downhillers will head over to Soldier Mountain Ski Area north of Fairfield on Tuesday, March 1 for the annual Sammis/Camas Cup downhill that remembers Ketchum’s Brett Sammis.

The Sammis/Camas day comprised of two downhill runs is one event of the three-event, three-day Soldier Mountain Downhill/Intermountain Division Cup of speed races that includes Masters and Juniors.

Chief of Race Ken Corrock said the recent snowfall will enable the Sammis/Camas Cup and Soldier Mountain Downhill racers to have a “fast track, going off from Easter Bump and the Toilet Bowl.”

Locals should sign up for the Sammis/Camas Cup Tuesday from 8-9:30 a.m. in the Soldier Mountain Lodge. Downhill races are set for 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. followed by awards on the Soldier Lodge deck. Race entry fee is $35 per person, plus the $36 lift ticket cost.

The other two U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) events at Soldier next week will occur Monday, Feb. 28 through Wednesday, March 2. They will start with downhill training Monday at 11 a.m. for Intermountain Masters racers and Intermountain Division juniors in A, J1/J2/J3 classes.

Junior races featuring Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation participants and others from Idaho, Wyoming and Utah will be run in conjunction with the Intermountain Masters heats—wrapping up next Wednesday with downhills at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
