Midgets are golden on Salmon ice

Win weekend tourney, state is next

Tuning up for the upcoming Idaho Amateur Hockey Association (IAHA) state tournament in Boise, the Sun Valley Midget high school hockey team (ages 15-18) won a weekend tourney in Salmon Sunday.

Sun Valley went 4-0 and outscored foes 19-4. Coach Chris Benson's squad won Sunday's championship game 1-0 over previously unbeaten Billings (Mt.) when Ian Murphy scored the winner, from Tony Martin. Suns goalie Cody Levitan (10 saves) earned the shutout.

Outshooting its opponents 119-51 in four games, Sun Valley also beat Skyline of Idaho Falls 6-1, skated past Bonneville/Hillcrest of Idaho Falls 7-3 and outscored Rock Springs (Wyo.) 5-0 behind a shutout by goalie Cassidy Carson (7 saves).

Tom Crosby and Charlie Evans each scored twice in the Skyline victory. Crosby added a three-goal hat trick to go with two goals by Murphy in the 7-3 success over Bonneville.

Other skaters on the title team were Drew Barsch, Riley Sibbach and Cooper Hanley.

This weekend at Idaho Ice World in Boise, the Midget Suns open state play against Boise Junior Steelheads Friday, Feb. 18 at 12:10 p.m., then play Idaho Falls Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Semi-finals are Saturday evening and championship games Sunday.
