It’s going to be a tough Great Basin Conference prep wrestling tournament Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Jerome, especially with three state tournament berths on the line instead of the four the conference got in 2010.
Seeding for the Great Basin Conference tournament occurs Monday, Feb. 14, and then the six-team state-qualifying meet starts Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jerome. The State 4A tournament is Feb. 24 at Nampa.
WoodRiverHigh School’s wrestlers tuned up for the district meet by wrestling Gooding and Jerome Wednesday night.
Gooding pulled out a close 40-35 decision over WoodRiver in the evening’s first match, then Jerome spanked the host Wolverines 66-15 in the finale. Action took place during Hailey’s “Senior Night” festivities.
Winning by pin for Wood River against Gooding were sophomore Tommy Bailey in just 10 seconds at 140 pounds, sophomore Tim Boyle at 119, junior Teague Ruhter at 152 and senior Kasey Barker at 189. Taking forfeit wins were Julianna Herrera at 160 and Jimmy Williams at 285.
Against Jerome, Tommy Bailey and Kasey Barker scored pins, while Alex Thomas notched a 7-4 decision in the 285-pound weight class.
Junior varsity winners for the evening from Wood River were Haiden Aitken by a 7-4 decision, Jeremiah Linderman by 13-1 decision, Colby Guisasola by a 2:50 pin, and Riley Beck by a 5:26 pin.
