Wood River High School senior wrestlers will be honored today, Wednesday at "Senior Night" activities as part of the home triangular meet finale against Jerome and Gooding starting at 5 p.m. in Hailey.
Coach Shawn Huntington's Wolverines will wrestle with Gooding beginning at 5 p.m., followed by Gooding against Jerome and Wood River meeting Jerome between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The "Senior Night" salute will be around 5 p.m. before the Gooding match.
Seniors are Alex Thomas, Willy Dugger, Kasey Barker, Tyler Bartlett, Julianna Herrera and Jimmy Williams.
Two golds at Challis
Hailey freshmen 112-pounder Cooper Bailey and junior 215-pounder Auden Ruhter won their classes Saturday at the nine-school Challis Invitational tournament.
Taking silver were Hailey seniors Kasey Barker at 189 and Alex Thomas 285 plus sophomore Tim Boyle at 119.
The Wolverines had seven other placers in the two-day tourney: 3—Tyler Bartlett (112) and Jared Anderson (119). 4—Quinn Guthrie (125), Tommy Bailey (140) and Willy Dugger (189). 5—Colby Guisasola (112) and Jeremiah Linderman (215).
Emerging as the top teams were last year's State 2A/1A third-place Challis (227 points, 3 individual champs) and last year's State 3A third-place Salmon (209 points, 5 individual champs). Wood River placed in fifth place, 118.5 points.
Tri-meet at Canyon Ridge
Huntington said the Wolverines had one of their best performances of the season during Wednesday's triangular meet in Twin Falls against host Canyon Ridge and perennial 4A wrestling titan Minico.
"We wrestled tough and beat Canyon Ridge and kept it close with longtime powerhouse Minico until the very end. Even in defeat the wrestlers battled hard," said Huntington about the Great Basin Conference clashes.
The Wolverines won nine of 14 classes including two forfeits in their 45-27 triumph over Canyon Ridge.
Jared Anderson (119), Andrew Beck (130), Teague Ruhter (152) and Kasey Barker (189) posted pins. Decision victories went to Cooper Bailey (8-3 at 112), Gus Conrad (6-4 at 140) and Tommy Bailey (1-0 at 145). Willy Dugger (215) and Alex Thomas (289) prevailed by forfeit.
In the 43-30 loss to Minico, Barker at 189 earned a 7-6 decision over Salvador Gutierrez. Thomas (289), JR Hill (171), Cooper Bailey (112) and Jared Anderson (119) won by pin. Andrew Beck (130) won 10-6. Wood River forfeited at 160 pounds.
Junior varsity winners at Canyon Ridge were Quinn Guthrie (8-5 and 6-4) and Zach Brown (pin). Others competing for Wood River on the night were Tim Boyle, Kyle Clark, Haiden Aitken, Jimmy Williams, Kaleb Guisasola and Tyler Bartlett.
