Boardercross a big hit

For the second stop of the USASA Intermountain Snowboard Series, the Sun Valley Snowboard Team hosted five events in four days Feb. 3-6 on Dollar Mountain and Baldy.

Boardercross races on Dollar, the first sanctioned junior BX ever held in Sun Valley, attracted a large field of 80 riders. "Sun Valley provided us with a great course and support," said snowboard team program director Andy Gilbert.

Standout moments for the local riders were Ryan Roemer winning both races in the toughest field—Youth Men ages 14-15. He qualified for the USASA national championship at Copper, Colo. in April.

Gilbert said, "Beverly has been a long time supporter of the SVSEF and an early supporter snowboard program from its creation in 1992. It is a huge honor to have your name on the cup. Past winners include Graham Watanabe and Kaitlyn Farrington."

Friday's event was a make-up slopestyle race on Dollar, replacing a canceled event at Jackson Hole, Wyo.

They shortened the course to jump, jump, rail and rail. The field size remained steady at 120 riders. Gilbert said, "It showed that snowboarding is alive and well in the Intermountain Division."
