Beer and football—it’s Superbowl XLV

Valley hosts many screens to view the big game

Besides being the last game of the NFL season, Superbowl XLV, featuring the Green Bay Packers vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers, will also be a television commercial-watching extravaganza. Look for advertisers to roll out their biggest-budget commercials of the year for Superbowl Sunday.

The game, which will take place at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will have television coverage starting at 4 p.m. on the Fox network. On Cox cable, that's Channel 6. This year's halftime show will have a live musical performance by the band The Black Eyed Peas.

If watching the game at home on the couch is unappealing, why not check out the valley's best flat screens to watch the big game? At Sun Valley Resort, it's Superbowl Sunday at the Sun Valley Club, which will be open for food and beverages for the entire game. In addition, the Duchin Lounge and the Sun Valley Inn Lobby Lounge will both have the game playing. River Run Lodge will remain open for the entire game with the bar open and a light-fare menu served until halftime.

"It's Grumpy's annual pot luck for Superbowl," said Grumpy's and Silver Dollar owner Pete Prekeges. "For years, all the regular guys who come up skiing for Superbowl weekend wanted to do something. So every year Grumpy's regulars bring a dish and watch the game."

Prekeges said there will be copious amounts of food at the Silver Dollar in Bellevue.

"We will have a free drink for everybody at the bar with every lead change in the game," Prekeges said. "There is a grab bag of drinks and someone pulls out a drink and that's what everyone in the bar has for free. I hope the game is 35 to 0."

Whiskey Jacques' in Ketchum will have game-day drink and food specials starting at 2 p.m. Lefty's will have Kobe beef burgers, half-price wings and happy-hour prices on beers starting at 3 p.m.

In Hailey, the Wicked Spud will have the game on all televisions screens and will have a special menu, beer specials and Bloody Mary cocktails available. McClain's Pizzeria will show the game and have drink and food specials.

In Bellevue, Mahoney's will offer 20-cent wings and happy-hour prices on all draft beers throughout the game.

If staying at home or having a game party is happening, take advantage of deals at Atkinsons' Markets in Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue. And, if the game does not warrant any interest for the women, they can enjoy Sturtevants' annual ladies big-game super sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Ketchum, with champagne mimosas and buffet party starting at 10 a.m. Look for more sales at Pete Lane's, Formula Sports and the Brass Ranch stores.
