Both varsity basketball teams from Carey enjoyed easy wins on their trip to Sun Valley Tuesday. Speed and balanced scoring allowed the Panther boys and girls to dominate their hosts in their lat-est Northside Conference clash.

Community School Head of School Andy Jones-Wilkins made what Carey principal John Peck considered a very magnanimous gesture in offering pre-game condolences to the Carey community on the loss of sophomore student/athlete Austin Hennefer in an October car accident.

There was a moment of silence before the tip-off. Jones-Wilkins also tipped his hat to Carey for its state football championship and for the admirable conduct of the Panther athletes and coaches.

Panther girls prevail 53-22

Jaide Parke and Micaela Adamson led a speedy Panther attack in the first game Tuesday, each scoring 16 points during Carey's 53-22 victory.

Parke scored 12 of her 16 in the first quarter when the visitors jumped to a 17-3 lead. Lilly Rivera and Morgan Parke each added 8 points, while Darby Northcott and Nicole Gomez scored 2 points each. McKayla Mecham added a free throw.

Cold shooting plagued the Cutthroat girls.

Against a stingy and quick defense, the hosts shot 15% for the game. Natalie Goddard again led the Cutthroats, this time with 9 points and 5 rebounds in a solid night against Carey's stifling de-fense.

Ella Marks had an off night with 4 points and 3 rebounds, both below her season bests. To round out the hosts' scoring, Madeleine Caraluzzi came off the bench with another exciting game (3 points, 1 rebound), Chelsea Cloud added 3 rebounds, Julie Doan had a basket and a rebound, Chloe Chrysikopoulous scored a point and Taylor Figge scored 3 points before going down with a painful injury just before halftime.

< Figge's injury was later reported to be a broken foot, ending the season for one of the Cutthroats' brightest players.

Carey (8-8, 3-3 league) hosts Dietrich Tuesday, Feb. 1 for its "Senior Night," while the Cutthroats (4-7, 1-5) travel to Camas County today, Friday and entertain Richfield Tuesday for their "Senior Night."

Carey boys stay hot

The Carey boys' varsity basketball team (14-2, 5-0 league) stretched its winning streak to seven games and remained unbeaten in 2011 with its 56-14 win in Sun Valley Tuesday night.

The Panthers dashed to a 38-5 halftime lead over their hosts, and had all 11 players score. Playing without flu-ridden leading scorer Henry Rickbeil (9.8 ppg), the Cutthroats had no answer for Carey's depth and speed. Carey also dominated the boards (30 total rebounds, 19 offensive).

Joey Laidlaw (4 rebounds) led Carey's balanced attack with 12 points. Dillon Cenarrusa (5 boards, 2 blocks) added 7 points for the winners, who shot 46% from the field compared to Sun Val-ley's 16%.

Three Panther players scored 6 points—Blair Peck, Jacy Baird and Baley Barg. Others were Jack Cenarrusa (5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), Brandon Dilworth and Charlie Rivera (4 points each, Rivera 3 assists). Chipping in 2 points were Chance Chavez, Caleb Cenarrusa and Shane Bingham (4 boards, 2 steals).

The Community School got a breakout game from Nick Krekow (8 points, 8 rebounds). Bobby Corker added a 3-pointer, Colton Sholtis 2 points and 2 rebounds and Sam Rogers a single point.

Tonight, the Cutthroats visit Camas County (4-11) while Carey hosts Dietrich (9-5, 4-1) on Tues-day, Feb. 1 in a game between Northside contenders.

Last Friday the Cutthroats dropped a 53-25 road decision at Twin Falls Christian (Krekow 6 points, Sholtis 5, Rickbeil 4, Eli Albarran 4). Carey shot 32% in a 37-28 league win at Richfield (19%). Barg (8 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) had a fine game for Carey while Peck (7 points, 4 steals) chipped in.
