In its second year, the Sun Valley Nordic Festival has created enthusiasm for winter sports beyond the trails, especially after sundown. The nonprofit Idaho Conservation League and the Winter Wildlands Alliance will present the Backcountry Film Festival at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey on Tuesday, Feb. 1, screening the best of the festival films. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the films start at 7 p.m. Admission is $8. The evening will include a raffle and beer from Big Sky Brewing Co.

Films will include Teton Gravity Research's "Deeper," which follows legendary snowboarder Jeremy Jones and other top riders as they forego helicopters, snowmobiles and lifts to venture deep into untouched terrain on their own. Other films include Sweetgrass Productions' short film "Desert River," a ski adventure in Alaska, and the film "Whitebark Warrior" from TreeFight and Snaz Media. This film chronicles the decline of thousand-year-old whitebark pines due to climate change.

In addition, the Backcountry Film Fest will show "Australis," a documentary on skiing and adventure in Antarctica by extreme skier Chris Davenport, "TELEvision" and "Cross Country Snowboarding."
