2011 Sun Valley Nordic Festival

Saturday, Jan. 29

· Ski the Rails: A family-friendly Nordic tour will start at the Serenade Lane intersection of the Wood River Trail in Ketchum and travel along the trail to Hailey 12 miles south, with aid stations along the way. Finish at Myrtle Street in Hailey with shuttle service to Sun Valley Brewery celebration, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

· Downtown Hailey Winter Celebration: After skiing the rails, enjoy music from “Up a Creek” at Sun Valley Brewery and festival specials at town stores and restaurants.

· Sun Valley Snowshoe Challenge: The Sun Valley Nordic & Snowshoe Center in the Sun Valley Clubhouse is hosting 5K and 10K snowshoe races at noon on the White Clouds Trails. Race is a Western Region qualifier for USSSA 2011 National Championships. Only race-day registration 10:30-11:30 a.m., $40. Details at sunvalleyrunning.com

· Kids Kilo Fun Run: Wood River Community YMCA is organizing a 1K race for children under 12, also at White Clouds. Register at woodriverymca.com or 727-9622. Details at sunvalleyrunning.com.

· 15th annual Galena Benefit: The Blaine County Recreation District is holding its annual benefit at Galena Lodge 20 miles north of Ketchum to support the lodge and its surrounding groomed trails. Price for the dinner is $100 and can be reserved at bcrd.org or by calling Jenny Busdon at 726-1649. Begins at 5:30 p.m.

 

Sunday, Jan. 30

· Mountain Fairy shuttle to Galena Lodge: The Mountain Fairy shuttle will offer rides from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area just north of Ketchum to Galena Lodge at 10 a.m. Stops will be made at Baker Creek and Prairie Creek by request. Call in advance to secure a seat—(925) 348-3521. $10 per person one-way.

· Galena Loppet: Enjoy a 20-kilometer tour of Galena Lodge’s trail system by way of green, blue or black trails. Beer and doughnuts will be provided at the halfway point of this free event. Costumes are encouraged. Start time is 10 a.m.  Call 726-4010 for more information.

 

Monday, Jan. 31

· Alturas Trail Ski and Swiss-style Après Ski at Smiley Creek Lodge: The Alturas Lake Ski Trail is groomed and winds 16 kilometers along Alturas Lake Creek to the lake. Smiley Creek lodge—37 miles north of Ketchum on state Highway 75—will serve a Swiss-style après-ski buffet from 4-7 p.m. The $16 meal includes one drink. Reservations are recommended at (877) 774-3547.

· Perspectives on Modern Cross-Country Ski Technique: Rick Kapala, head Nordic coach for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation will talk about the evolution of cross-country skiing technique, 7 p.m. at the Community School Auditorium.

 

Tuesday, Feb. 1

· Twilight ski and dinner: Galena Lodge hosts twilight skiing from 5-6:15 p.m., with an a la carte dinner spanning from 6-8 p.m.

· Lunchtime ski clinic: Join the Galena Lodge Nordic Ski School instructors for a lunchtime skate ski clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Cost is $20 per person. Call 726-4010 for more information.

· Backcountry Film Festival: The Idaho Conservation League and Winter Wildlands Alliance will host the Backcountry Film Festival in Hailey’s Liberty Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8.

 

Wednesday, Feb. 2

· Mountain Fairy shuttle to Galena Lodge: See the Jan. 30 entry for details.

· Wildlife snowshoe walks: Join guide Kandis Larson for a free scenic snowshoe walk on Galena trails. It begins on the lodge’s deck. All ages are welcome for the hour-and-a-half walk. Snowshoes are required and can be rented at the lodge. Call 726-4010 for more information.

· Sun Valley Ski Hall of Fame: The Ketchum-Sun Valley Heritage & Ski Museums will announce the first nominees to the hall of fame: alpine skiers Chuck Ferries, Bill Janss, Christin Cooper, Bobby Burns and Nelson Bennett. The Nordic nominees are Rob Kiesel, Kevin Swigert, Leif Odmark and Phil Puchner.

· Peter Ashley presentation: Peter Ashley will talk about his experiences as a ski racer, coach of the U.S. Ski Team and vice president of Fischer Skis’ Nordic Division.

 

Thursday, Feb. 3

· Mountain Fairy shuttle to Galena Lodge: See the Jan. 30 entry for details.

· Snowshoe with a Ranger: Galena Lodge, 11 a.m. Tour is about an hour and a half.

· Lunchtime ski clinic: Join the Galena Lodge Nordic Ski School instructors for a lunchtime skate ski clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Cost is $20 per person. Call 726-4010 for more information.

· Party@Perry’s: Starting at 5 p.m., anyone eating at Perry’s restaurant in Ketchum will have 10 percent of their bill go toward Galena Lodge and the trails.

· Ketchum Nordic Night of Music and Competition: An in-town night of Nordic sprint races, music and a snowshoe dance-off at the future site of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts across the street from the post office at Fourth Street and Second Avenue. Brooklyn, N.Y.-based band The Pimps of Joytime will play, with a bonfire and warm refreshments. Starts at 5 p.m. and is Free.

 

Friday, Feb. 4

· Mountain Fairy shuttle to Galena Lodge: See the Jan. 30 entry for details.

· Ski the Sawtooths: Park Creek Nordic Ski Area, nine miles west of Stanley, will offer a chance to ski in the Sawtooth Mountains and an après-ski party in the Sawtooth Hotel with food and drink specials. Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all weekend.

· Boulder Mountain Tour Expo: Wood River Community YMCA, Ketchum. Everyone entered in the tour needs to pick up information between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

· Snowshoe adventure: Join Idaho Conservation League for a snowshoeing excursion up Titus Ridge for a panoramic view of the area’s mountain ranges: Boulders, Pioneers, White Clouds, Sawtooths and Smokies. Bring a sack lunch. Call 726-7485 for more information.

· Best of Banff Film Festival and Friends of the SNFAC Fundraiser: NexStage Theatre in Ketchum, doors open at 6 p.m. for pre-film social hour with wine, beer and food. Films start at 7 p.m. A raffle will also be held each night for winter sports equipment. Raffle and film tickets available at Backwoods, Elephant’s Perch, Chapter One and at the door. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.

 

Saturday, Feb. 5

· 36th Boulder Mountain Tour: The 32K race will start at 10 a.m. in Senate Meadows near Galena Lodge. Register at bouldermountaintour.com.

· Second annual Half-Boulder: The 15K race will start near the Baker Creek parking area at 10:45 a.m. For details, go to bouldermountaintour.com.

· Best of Banff Film Festival: See Feb. 4 entry.

 

Sunday, Feb. 6

· SWIX Boulder Mountain Tour Demo Day: Sun Valley Nordic Center. Free skiing, 10 a.m.
