The 111 Connection

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

All right, I have always believed that we all were somehow bound together in this world and that this year was a special one, but never in my life have I been more certain. Here's why:

Take the last two numbers of the year you were born and add it to the age you will be this year. Go ahead. Do it. Doesn't it come out 111? Wow. Now, try it out on your family. Now, try it on your friends. This mathematical equation just flatly blew my mind.

Then, I remembered something. I did this on the year 2000 when I was 59 and it came out 100. I computed all ages of friends and family again and it came out 100. Try this on yourself, your family, your friends. One hundred, right?

But, wait a minute. Pick any year. In 1985, I was 44, born in 1941 so it equals 85. If you were 23 in 1985 you were born in 1962. It's a mathematical fact.

This country was born in 1776 and on its 165th birthday entered into World War II in 1941. (1776 + 165 = 1941) Hold it. The last two years of the birth of the nation is 76. If it was 165 years old in 1941, 165 and 76 is 241. It doesn't compute. The formula works for the age of man, not historical dates of time.

Well, I don't know what this all means. Maybe it was because I was doing my taxes last night and all these numbers were bombarding my brain. I'm sure most of you can figure this all out, but I'm still stuck on the idea that we are all connected.

<

President Obama in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night touched on the idea that we are all bound together and that we all had to work together to create a better tomorrow. It will take sacrifice and struggle to meet the new challenges in our lives. We need to fix what needs fixing and move forward. I believe that it has never been so true.

This community is bound together with families and friends and neighbors all trying to live a happy and prosperous life. One way to achieve this dream is to start to reconnect with one another again. Do you really believe that there are people in this valley who are more entitled than others? Sure, money is a great dividing factor and some may feel that way, but we're all in this together.

Take the Castle Rock Fire a few years ago as an excellent example. If those flames had come over Baldy that day and spread down the slopes, we all would have been facing death and destruction together. We all pulled together during that time and it made us proud. We shared food and shelter and terror as brave firefighters performed the monumental task of saving our lives and homes.

Yes, we are connected. Let us bind together this year. We are all 111. We are one.

Nice talking to you.
