First JN races are done for SVSEF Nordic kids

Weekend events at Jackson Hole’s Trail Creek


It was a good weekend for 33 Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation cross-country skiers Jan. 15-16 during the first of three 2011 Junior National qualifying competitions that attracted 186 racers to Trail Creek in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Sun Valley's Kelsey Dickinson, 17, and Maggie Williams, 15, led the Lake Creek-based girls, while William Spiller, 18, and Andrew Pfeiffer, 17, were among the top Sun Valley boys.

Dickinson won the "A" Final of Saturday's J1/Older Junior sprint final. She also captured Saturday's girls' J1 (ages 16-17) 5-kilometer skate race by 19 seconds over teammate Sloan Storey. Five SVSEF J1s ended up in the top 10 of that race.

Williams was the "A" Final girls' J2 sprint heat winner Saturday and she added the J2 5k skate race win Sunday.

Spiller and Andrew Pfeiffer placed first and fifth respectively in Saturday's J1/OJ boys' "B" Final sprint heat. Pfeiffer also finished fourth overall of 39 J1/OJ finishers in Sunday's men's 10k skate race.

Next qualifying races are Jan. 26-29 at Soldier Hollow, Utah. The final JN qualifying events and selection of the 2011 Intermountain Division team to Junior Nationals in Minneapolis, Minn. March 6-12 will be made after the Sun Valley qualifying races Feb. 12-13 at Lake Creek north of Ketchum.
