Trappers no worry for Suns in 9-0, 10-4 sweep

Goalie Thomson moves into third place all-time

It was a big weekend on the score sheet for the Sun Valley Suns senior men's hockey team (7-1-0), which swept the Cache Valley Trappers from Logan, Utah 9-0 and 10-4 at Sun Valley Skating Center.

The Suns outshot the Trappers 115-45 and out-pointed them 44-8 led by the newly-formed forward line of center Chad Levitan (5 goals), left wing Ryan Enrico (5 points) and right wing Bryan O'Connell (5 goals, 8 points).

Levitan and O'Connell each notched three-goal hat tricks in Friday's 9-0 Suns romp. Jon Duval added one goal and two assists.

Friday was also a big night for eighth-year Suns goalie Ryan Thomson (6-1-0). Not only did Thomson (25 saves) post his fifth career shutout, he moved into third place on the all-time Suns goaltending win list.

Thomson (58-23-0) surpassed 1975-79 netminder Charlie Holt (57-12-3) and has only 1979-88 goalie Dan Nee (150-57-6) and 14-year Suns backstop Tony Benson (90-43-7) ahead of him on the Suns honor roll.

On Saturday, the Suns remained unbeaten at home in six outings with goalie Mat Gershater (16 saves) in the net. Levitan, O'Connell and Matt Ward each scored twice in the 10-4 victory. Center Charles Friedman and defender Eric Demment each had a goal and two assists on the evening.

The Suns resume action Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22 against Langley (B.C.) Senior Chiefs from east of Vancouver, down the Fraser River toward Chilliwack. Opening faceoffs are 7 p.m. each night on resort ice. Saturday's game benefits Sun Valley Adaptive Sports.

Langley's last visit to Idaho was two years ago, Jan. 16-17, 2009. The Chiefs won the first game 5-2 and the Suns earned a weekend split 5-3.
