Garden to present snow discovery day

Sawtooth Botanical Garden in Ketchum will celebrate Little Winter Wonders: Snow Discovery Day on Sunday, Jan. 16, from 9-11 a.m. Activities include an outdoor discovery walk, snow games, snacks with cocoa, story time and a winter-themed craft. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. This class is for children ages 3-8. The cost is $10 for garden members and $15 for non-members. Hunger Coalition receives 'One for One' benefit

Rico's Pizza and Pasta restaurant in Ketchum will offer a "One for One" benefit for the Hunger Coalition on Monday, Jan. 17, through Presidents' Day weekend in February. Anyone can provide a can of food or nonperishable food item at the Hunger Coalition's collection box at Rico's and the restaurant will match the donation. Rico's opens nightly at 5 p.m. For details, call 726-7426.

Winter Feast for the Soul begins

An opening ceremony for the Winter Feast for the Soul will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at 7 a.m. at Light on the Mountains Spiritual Center, south of Ketchum between Gimlet and Bigwood Landscape. The 40-day worldwide spiritual event began in the Wood River Valley takes place through Wednesday, Feb. 23. Daily meditation sites have been organized in Ketchum and Hailey through Feb. 23.

The feast ends Wednesday, Feb. 23, with a Taize service at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sun Valley at 5:30 p.m. The closing ceremony takes place after the Taize service at 6:30 p.m. with a final 40-minute meditation. For details, visit www.winterfeastforthesoul.com.

Empty Bowls to feed the hungry

The Empty Bowls fundraising event takes place Sunday, Jan. 16, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum. Modeled after the international grassroots Empty Bowls Project, the purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in the Wood River Valley community and raise funds to buy food for those who need it.

The community fundraiser is intended to benefit the Hunger Coalition through the sale of 200 handcrafted and hand-painted ceramic bowls created by professional and amateur artisans and students. Each bowl is available for $20; lunch is included.

Guests are invited to fill their bowl of choice from a variety of freshly prepared soups donated by local restaurants and caterers including Atkinsons', Bigwood Bread, CK's Real Food, Perry's, Rolling in Dough, Sego, Silver Fox Catering, Sun Valley Co. and Toni's Ice Cream.

Mountain niceness returns for Presidents' Day weekend

Save the date for the Mountain Niceness Fest weekend Feb. 19-20. This year's Marley in the Mountains concert "Shamrocks and Dreadlocks" takes place Saturday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m. with live music by Ethan Tucker and the Grassroots Allstars, Carlos Jones and the Plus Band and Swagger, an Irish rock band. Tickets are $10.

In addition, The Up Down-Get Down race takes place Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8 a.m. on Durrance, and a Snow Salutations yoga class takes place Sunday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. For details, visit www.mountainniceness.com.
