Graphic courtesy Michael Green The fourth annual Winter Feast for the Soul, Jan. 15 to Feb. 23, is a 40-day worldwide spiritual event that began in the Wood River Valley.

The Winter Feast for the Soul, a 40-day period of spiritual practice, takes place Saturday, Jan. 15, through Wednesday, Feb. 23. Last year, 20,000 people around the world in 30 countries took part in the event, which was recorded on the website www.winterfeastforthesoul.com.

Rosemary Cody, a Wood River Valley feast coordinator, has arranged for events to begin locally Thursday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. with a Rumi poetry reading. Members of the public are invited to bring their favorite Rumi poem to read or to simply listen to the poetry of the inspirational 16th-century Persian poet.

An opening ceremony will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at 7 a.m. Both events will take place at Light on the Mountains Spiritual Center, south of Ketchum between Gimlet and Bigwood Landscape. In addition, daily meditation sites have been organized in Ketchum and Hailey through Feb. 23.

It was one line from Rumi that inspired Hailey resident Valerie Skonie to found the Winter Feast: "What nine months does for the embryo, 40 early mornings will do for your growing awareness."

The feast will end on Wednesday, Feb. 23, with a Taize service at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sun Valley at 5:30 p.m. The closing ceremony will take place after the Taize service at 6:30 p.m. with a final 40-minute meditation.
