Adult volleyball tourney to help young players

Community School volleyball coach and former Albertson College (College of Idaho) star Kristyn Rutland is starting a new club volleyball program for Wood River Valley youth, along with Kristi Vandenburg.

To raise scholarship money for young people who can't afford The 5B Volleyball Club, Rutland and Vandenburg are organizing their first Adult 4-on-4 Coed Volleyball Tournament for Saturday, Jan. 22 at The Community School gym, Sun Valley.

Play begins at 9 a.m. preceded by the captains' meeting at 8:30 a.m.

Each team must have one female player, but there will be no male-female touch requirements during play. Cost is $25 per player with prizes for the first-place team. Fees may be paid Jan. 22 as long as teams are registered before the tourney date.

Ski Club's Billy Goat Loppet set for Jan. 22

For the sixth year, the Sun Valley Ski Club will stage the Billy Goat Loppet cross-country ski event Saturday, Jan. 22 at Billy's Bridge north of Ketchum in the Sawtooth National

Recreation Area. The 10-kilometer freestyle (skate only) race will begin at 11 a.m., preceded by registration at Billy's Bridge from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Backwoods Mountain Sports will be sponsoring the race again along with Hammer Nutrition. Organizers expressed their appreciation to Perry's for the cookies and Tully's for hot chocolate. Last year, 84 racers turned out despite the fact that lack of snow forced a change of course, from Prairie Creek down Harriman Trail.

Organizer Jenny Busdon said, "Billy's Bridge has such good skiing. The course is fun and perfect for getting well tuned if you're registered to do the Boulder Mountain Tour or Half Marathon Boulder on Saturday, Feb. 5. With the snow conditions superb this year at Billy's we're looking forward to seeing a great turnout."

Freestylers stop at Tahoe series

Three Sun Valley Freestyle Team athletes competed in The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Northstar art Tahoe this past weekend. Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation athlete Brita Sigourney placed fifth in halfpipe and secured a spot in the Winter X Games later this month at Aspen, Colo. Hannah Haupt qualified for the finals and ended up eighth. Tai Barrymore qualified in the 14th spot and moved to ninth in the finals.

Butler to World University Games

Sierra Nevada College junior Austen Butler has been invited to compete in the 2011 Winter World University Games Jan. 26-Feb. 6 at Erzurum, Turkey. He will compete in halfpipe and big air events.

Known as the Winter Universiade, it is an international sporting and cultural festival staged every two years in a different city. The International University Sports Federation (FISU) organizes them specifically for college and university athletes. Butler said, "For a student-athlete, this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. It's also an honor to represent SNC and the state of Nevada."

Butler, from Hailey, began his academic career at SNC in 2007. He is an Entrepreneurship major and member of the five-time national championship snowboard team from Sierra Nevada. He is currently ranked as the top collegiate men's competitor in the nation in the discipline of halfpipe. After graduation, Austen hopes to continue snowboarding at a professional level and pursue entrepreneurial endeavors.

Sign up by Jan. 21 for Sawtooth United spring soccer

The save-money sign-up deadline is Friday, Jan. 21 for the 2011 Sawtooth United Competitive Soccer Team season. The SUFC local youth program is accepting registrations for all players in the U-10 through U-18 age groups, including players with birth dates between Aug. 1, 1992 and July 31, 2001. All registration is done online at sawtoothunited.com (click on registration). A $40 late fee is assessed for registrations after Jan. 21. Call 726-1160.

Senior Hockey League update

In recent Senior Hockey League action, league-leading Grumpy's/SV Auto Club edged second-place SV.com 6-5 in overtime on a game-winning John McGuone goal, and Yoga College slipped past Morgan's Fine Finishes by a score of 4-2.

Grumpy's jumped out with gusto, scoring four goals in the first period. SV.com bounced back with three goals in the second and tied it 5-5 in the third. McGuone's second game winner of the season came on a feed by Frank Salvoni. Grumpy's goals came from Zak Greenawalt, Rune Haavik, Tuck Hall, Rod Watson and Cody Proctor. Scoring for SV.com were Bryan Winkler, Ivars Muzis, Rob Prew and Chris Salvaterria.

Yoga College held Morgan's scoreless in the third period to turn a close game into the 4-2 victory. Brad Dredge, Tate Mills, Taylor Rothgeb and Kris Webster scored for Yoga, assists to Noah Loyd (2) and Don Saver. Dave Hennessy tallied two goals for Morgan's, assists to Steve Morcone and Sean Murray.

Standings through recent games are Grumpy's 5-1, SV.com 3-3, Morgan's Fine Finishes 2-4 and Yoga 2-4.

University of Utah alpine races

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine racers competed in a very competitive field Jan. 8-9 at Park City, Utah during the alpine portion of the 2011 University of Utah Invitational. The University of Colorado (444 points) emerged with the two-day alpine lead over Utah (435), with New Mexico third (421.5) and Denver University (412) fourth. Denver's Lauren Eder of Hailey finished 32nd giant slalom and 26th slalom, or 22nd and 20th among the university skiers.

Miles Fink-Debray, 22, of the SVSEF was seventh in the men's GS, only 1.07 seconds behind race winner Andreas Kilde of Norway. Fink-Debray placed 16th in slalom. Teagen Palmer was 25-GS/31-SL, Amanda Stelling 50-SL and Sierra Fox 53-SL.

Rec programs for kids, adults at Hailey Ice, Spirit n'Motion

Winter recreational offerings are offered outdoors by Hailey Ice at Roberta McKercher Skate Park, and by Spirit n'Motion Athletic School indoors at 3950 Woodside Blvd. in Hailey and also the Ketchum YMCA.

Hailey Ice has free open skating during January and February from 2-6 p.m. weekdays and 10-6 weekends. Blaine County Recreation District's Skate Night is Friday, Jan. 14 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Hailey Hockey for girls and boys in grades K-5 begins this week, after school, and Hailey Figure Skating for girls and boys takes place Fridays through Feb. 11 starting at 3 p.m. Call Bege Reynolds 788-3325 or Diane Dick 721-7117.

Heath and Amanda Norton at Spirit n'Motion offer gymnastics, cheerleading and Zumba classes ($5 a class). Open gym sessions at the Woodside Blvd. facility across from Power Engineers are Saturdays from 10-12. A full schedule of gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline classes is offered weekdays in Hailey and at the Ketchum Y. Competitive cheerleading is also popular, 720-4306. Snowshoe Challenge on Jan. 29

Sign-ups are being accepted for the Sun Valley Snowshoe Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Sun Valley Nordic Center. No experience is necessary to take part in an event that is helping to kick off the 2011 Sun Valley Nordic Festival. The 10-kilometer and 5k races start at 12 noon on the White Cloud Nordic system. Results reported from Sunday's senior hockey games at Sun Valley Skating Center:

Flyers 4, Coyotes 4 (tie): Sara Schroeder (2 goals), Justin Hellman and Bill Brassil scored for the Flyers, and Eric Kiel, Peter Ahrens, Tom Cahill and Johnny Galgano for the 'Yotes;

Blues 4, Hawks 3: Putting the Blues over the hump were singles by Steve Gentling, Lisa Wood, Brad King and Rod Harten, set up by Chris Zarkos (3 assists). Ned Wheeler, Gabrielle Valesquez and Dick Springs were Hawks scorers, assisted by Ned Burns and Lolly Greeninger;

Hutch's Bad Dogs 2, Vipers 2 (tie): Bryan Speth (2 goals) and Kenny Pratt (1 assist) got the Dogs points, while Tizz Miller scored two Vipers goals, Jim Laski assisting;

Sharks 3, Rangers 2: John Baker (2 goals) and Brian Dirksmeier were Sharks scorers, and Pete Prekeges (2 goals) put the Rangers on the board;

Islanders 3, Senators 1: Anthony Naghsh, Jim Slanetz and Tony Mallane scored for Isles, with Bryan Furlong getting the goal for the Senators.
