Skoch Cup brings Alpine Masters to Baldy

Formula Sports races begin Friday

Ketchum's Formula Sports is again sponsoring the Skoch Cup Intermountain Division Alpine Masters races Friday through Sunday, Jan. 14-16 on the Warm Springs side of Baldy. The Sun Valley Ski Club is presenting the three-day race event.

The event typically attracts over 100 competitors from the Intermountain Division and the rest of the U.S.

Excellent snow conditions on Baldy appear to favor a super giant slalom start from near the top of Greyhawk for the "younger bucks." Women and more experienced men go from the traditional lower start. In either case, there is always excitement as the racers transition from the Greyhawk Road onto Hemingway.

The two-run giant slalom is Saturday and is expected to start on the Hemingway Road and cross over into Lower Greyhawk near the bottom. Sunday's slalom will also be two runs and is typically held on Cozy.

Cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be distributed among top finishers in the men's and women's divisions. The prizes will be based upon the lowest aggregate times for all three races.

After Friday's SG there will be a social hour at Apple's Bar & Grill. Saturday's big social event at Carol's Dollar Mountain Lodge from 6-8 p.m. will include a party and awards for SG and GS. Slalom awards and overall honors will be presented at Warm Springs Lodge after Sunday's races.

The Skoch Cup is an Intermountain Division Masters ski race open to ages 18-and-above. Contact Ken Dreyer at 720-7554 for more information on eligibility or if you are interested in participating in the regional event. If you are not already a member, race series licenses will be available for $25. Fees for the SG are $40, and $30 each for GS and SL.

Early registration is Thursday between 11 a.m. and 12 noon at Warm Springs Lodge. Race day check-in is between 7:30-8:15 a.m., also at Warm Springs Lodge. Visit skiracereg.com for online sign-up.

Sierra Nevada racers on top in slalom

The Sun Valley Ski Club staged its first slalom of 2011 on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Thirty-three racers vied for honors within their age groups.

The visiting Sierra Nevada College ski team spiced things up by entering top racers. One of their racers previously skied for Croatia and competed in two Winter Olympics.

Even though the Sierra Nevada racers provided a high level of competition, local Carl Rixon Jr. barely missed winning the overall title finishing only .44 seconds behind race winner Matyas Mleziva. Third place in the men's division went to college racer Chad Hedlund.

Katherine Suttor, a local Sun Valley Ski Club racer, finished third in the ladies division. First and second places went to Sierra Nevada racers Matea Ferk and Hedvig Spangs.
