The Sun Valley Suns men's hockey team lost for the first time all season during a two-game weekend split at Park City Jan. 7-8, but the Suns may have gained a forward to help them for the rest of the season.

Massachusetts native Bryan O'Connell, 23, joined the Suns for their only road trip of the 2010-11 season at the Park City Pioneers last weekend. O'Connell scored two goals and two assists in the weekend set on the Utah ice sheet.

His third period shorthanded goal gave the Suns a 4-2 lead in a 5-3 win Saturday over the Pioneers. On Friday, the Suns got off the team bus a little slowly, spotted Park City a 6-0 lead and lost the opener 6-4.

O'Connell is best known locally for being a thorn in the side of the Suns while playing for Bobby Farrelly's East Coast Gutter Snipes. Three years ago, O'Connell was the weekend-high scorer with four goals and seven points in a 10-9 (OT) and 9-6 Snipes sweep of the Suns.

He teamed well with eighth-year Suns wing Ryan Enrico from Hoboken, N.J. Enrico (a team-best 4 goals, 6 assists season) scored twice in Saturday's win over the Pioneers and ended as the Suns weekend-high scorer with five points.

Enrico's first-period goal Saturday erased a 1-0 deficit and got the Suns going—as did a Chad Levitan shorthanded tally and another first-period goal by captain Vilnis Nikolaisons, on a pass from goalie Ryan Thomson (56 saves).

The Suns never did get going Friday night until the third period, when Cody Proctor, Taylor Rothgeb, O'Connell and Trevor Thomas scored goals in a three-and-a-half minute span to ease the embarrassment of their early 6-0 deficit.

It was a fairly combative series—seven players drawing game misconducts. They were Levitan, Danny Ward and Kris Webster for the Suns, and Scotty John, Eric Milliron, Thomas Gata and Chris Jeavons for Park City (4-5).

With his big weekend, Enrico (93 goals, 112 assists for 205 points) soared over 200 career points and tied Dale Johnson for 16th place on the all-time Suns scoring list. The Suns (5-1-0) continued to shine in the third periods of their games, outscoring foes 15-1, and continued to lag in the second periods, being outscored 12-4.

Next up: The Cache Valley Trappers from Logan, Utah visit for a two-game home series Jan. 14-15 at 7 p.m. each night at Sun Valley Skating Center. Saturday's game will benefit Sun Valley Ballet.

A couple of changes in the season schedule—Utah County Blizzard will return to Sun Valley for a Jan. 28-29 two-game set, replacing Vancouver Moto Ice from British Columbia. The Vancouver visit has been shifted to March 11-12 as the final two games of the season.
