Sports summary

Farrow grabs silver in Surefoot super giant slalom

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine ski racer Tanner Farrow had a great result with a second place overall out of 57 men's super giant slalom finishers in the Dec. 22 Surefoot Colorado Ski Club finale at Winter Park, Colo. Farrow, 16, won the J1 class (ages 17-19) in the second SG of the day and ended up only .60 seconds off the winning pace of France's Gabriel Rivas from the University of Colorado. In the first SG Dec. 22, Farrow placed sixth of 63 finishers and was the fourth J1. He nearly did as well in the Dec. 20 and 21 men's giant slaloms, placing 14th and sixth overall (6-J1 and 4-J1).

Other SVSEF racers and results/class placings during the Winter Park and Steamboat Springs FIS (International Ski Federation) series:

Teagen Palmer, 16, was 30th and 32nd SG (11-J2 and 14-J2); Harlan Collins, 17, placed 23rd and 16th GS (13-J1 and 12-J1), and 24th and 10th SG (19-J1 and 6-J1); Sierra Fox, 17, was 26th and 21st SG (17-J1/14-J1).

Ski Club slalom is Jan. 5

The Sun Valley Ski Club is opening its 2011 alpine ski race series with a slalom race Wednesday, Jan. 5 on the Warm Springs side of Baldy. Registration is from 8-9 a.m. at Warm Springs Lodge with the first run at 10 am. Cost is $15 for two timed runs.

Bear Cat prep wrestling

A little banged up, the Wood River High School wrestling team still came up with two placers in the top six of their weight classes during the Bear Cat Invitational varsity meet Dec. 17-18 at Jerome High.

Capturing fifth places were Tyler Bartlett (112 pounds) and Jared Anderson (119). Senior Alex Thomas didn't wrestle (shoulder injury) and senior Kasey Barker suffered an arm injury in the semi-finals and injury defaulted out of the tournament.

In the Bear Cat JV meet at Twin Falls High School, Cooper Bailey remained unbeaten at 112 and was Wood River's only champion. Three Wolverines took second places—Quinn Guthrie (125), Zach Brown (140) and Willy Dugger (189).

Ski Club Soup Social Jan. 11

RSVP by Friday, Jan. 7 for the Sun Valley Ski Club's annual soup social scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ketchum American Legion Hall. The menu includes homemade soups, bread, hot dogs, chips, desserts, wine, beer and soft drinks. Cost is $15 per person. Senior Hockey League update

In Senior Hockey League action Dec. 23 on resort ice, SV.com got the game-winning goal by Ryan Enrico in overtime to edge Morgan's Fine Finishes 2-1 and Grumpy's/SV Auto Club put the hammer down on Yoga College of India winning 9-4.

Other SV.com scorers were Bryan Winkler and Dave Hennessy. There was a bench-clearing crawl. In the Grumpy's victory, Zak Greenawalt and Rune Haavik tallied three-goal hat tricks, Frank Salvoni added two goals and Rod Watson one. Yoga goals came from Don Saver (2), Zac Crist and Taylor Rothgeb.

Standings prior to Christmas were Grumpy's 4-1, SV.com 3-2, Morgan's Fine Finishes 2-3 and Yoga 1-4.
