Big events highlight winter calendar

Sun Valley to celebrate 75th anniversary season

Sun Valley Resort will begin celebrating its 75th anniversary season with a Dollar Mountain Terrain Park Rail Jam exhibition on Friday, Dec. 17. The Sun Valley tree-lighting festival will take place on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 5 p.m. Enjoy Christmas songs by the Sun Valley Carolers, view ice sculptures, delight in free hot chocolate and cookies as well as a visit from Santa Claus. The Duchin Room will feature live entertainment.

Sun Valley Resort will present a 75th season celebration with a Silver and Gold Ice Show on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The all-star ice show will feature Olympic medalists Evan Lysacek, Sasha Cohen, Brian Boitano, Ryan Bradley, Nathan Chen and more. A torchlight parade will follow the show on Dollar with fireworks.

Sun Valley will also present a Sun Valley Classical Christmas Concert on Thursday, Dec. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Valley Opera House.

A Christmas Eve Festival in Sun Valley will take place Friday, Dec. 24, with the Sun Valley Carolers, the Nutcracker on Ice, free ice skating, torchlight parade and fireworks. Events begin at 5 p.m. For details, call 622-2135.

2nd annual Sun Valley Nordic Festival debuts

The second Sun Valley Nordic Festival will take place Saturday, Jan. 29, through Sunday, Feb. 6. Ten days of events and activities include clinics, races, special trail pass rates and demos. Festival highlights include Ski the Rails, which offers free skiing on the Wood River Trails on Saturday, Jan. 29.

The week's most important event, the Boulder Mountain Tour, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m. The 36th annual 32k race begins in Senate Meadows near Galena Lodge. For details, visit svnordicfestival.com.

Get ready for the Snowshoe Challenge

Sunvalleyrunning.com and the Elephants Perch present the Sun Valley Snowshoe Challenge being held on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Sun Valley Nordic Center on the White Cloud trail system. The event will serve as a West Region qualifier for the USSSA (Unites States Snowshoe Association) National Championships with three race distances of 5K, 10K, and a Kids Kilo Fun Run. Enjoy the Best of Banff

The 11th annual Best of Banff Mountain Film Festival will take place at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 5. Enjoy award-winning films on mountain sport and support the Friends of the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center's annual fundraising event. Tickets are $15. For details, call 622-0095.

Expedition Inspiration helps fight cancer

The Expedition Inspiration Annual Moonlight Snowshoe, Dinner and Auction event will take place Saturday, Feb. 12. The annual event is a breast cancer research fundraiser and will take place at the Valley Club in Hailey at 5:30 p.m. For details, call 726-6456.

The second annual Marley in the Mountains will take place Saturday, Feb. 19. For details, visit marleyinthemountains.com.

Snowbox Derby is a winter favorite

The annual Snowbox Derby will take place Sunday, Feb. 27, at Rotarun ski area in Croy Canyon west of Hailey. For details, call 578-2273.

Ski and snowboarding greats to be honored

International Ski History Association and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Sunday, April 3, at Sun Valley Inn Limelight Room at 6 p.m. Details: 622-2135.
