Caulkins runs in NCAA West Regional

A red-shirt freshman for University of Portland Pilots, Hailey's Chase Caulkins was promoted to Portland's men's cross country team that competed Saturday, Nov. 13 in the NCAA West Regional 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) footrace at Springfield, Ore. near Eugene.

Caulkins (31:24, 5:03 per mile) placed 71st overall of 178 runners as all seven Pilots finished in the top 75. He helped Portland (131) to fourth place in the final 25-school standings behind Oregon (63), Stanford (65) and California (78).

The race winner at Springfield Country Club was Portland sophomore Trevor Dunbar (29:57.89, 4:49 per mile) on a photo finish over Arizona's Stephen Sambu (29:57.95).

Portland's #13-ranked thinclads with their fourth-place regional finish earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships Nov. 22 at Terre Haute, Indiana.

Former Wood River High School runner Caulkins won the Idaho State 4A cross country championship in 2009.
