Sports summary


Sign up this week for Senior Hockey

     This is the final week to sign up for the Senior B and B+ Hockey Leagues, a recreational league of Sunday evening games from November 2010 through April 2011 at Sun Valley Skating Center.

     Final date of registration is Sunday, Oct. 31 by 12 noon at Sturtevants in Ketchum and Hailey. All players must have USA Hockey registration before playing. Teams will be drawn next week, on Monday.

     The first games will be Sunday, Nov. 7. The full schedule of games will be published in the Mountain Express on Nov. 10.

 

Fun runs this weekend

     Costumed runners will be prominent this weekend in the Ketchum/Sun Valley area where two fun runs will be staged on back-to-back Halloween weekend days.

     Sunvalleyrunning.com is staging its first Trail Creek 12-kilometer (7.7-mile) trail run Saturday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. near Sun Valley’s Trail Creek Cabin. There will be awards and costume prizes. Race day registration is from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Saturday for $25.

     As his senior project, Wood River High senior Brandon Wade is hosting a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) running and walking race called “Willie’s Run for the Environment” on Sunday, Oct. 31 at Hulen Meadows Park north of Ketchum. All proceeds go to the Willie Neal Environmental Awareness Fund. Registration is from 9-9:45 a.m. and starting time is 10 a.m. Entry fee is $20, $50 for families.

 

Referee clinic is Saturday in Sun Valley

     All referees for youth and adult ice hockey games must be registered with USA Hockey and “certified” as an official. Crucial to the certification process is attending an USA Hockey Referee Clinic on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sun Valley City Hall and Sun Valley Skating Center. There is no fee for attending. There will be classroom and on-ice time, plus recess for lunch. Contact Bobby Noyes at 720-1257 or email bnoisey@aol.com

 

Youth bowling league begins

     The 2010 Wood River USBC Youth Bowling League is starting up at Mountain Sun Lanes, Bellevue. The league starts Saturday, Oct. 30 at noon and runs for eight weeks at $80 per person. Plans call for 7-11 and 12-17 year-old divisions. Organizers are offering a $250 scholarship at the end of the session.

 

Hockey coaching clinics in November

     Coaching clinics sponsored by USA Hockey have been scheduled for Ketchum City Hall on three dates in November, depending on coaching levels. You can register online at usahockey.com or email Nicole Perkins at npsv@cox.net

     All clinics last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Level 1 clinic is Saturday, Nov. 6. It is mandatory for coaching and assistant coaching players ages 5-8. The Level 2 clinic is Saturday, Nov. 13 for coaching ages 9-11. And the Level 3 clinic is Sunday, Nov. 14 for coaching ages 12-18.
