The Community School announced last week that seniors Zana Davey and Eric Griffith have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
According to a school press release, the seniors are among about 16,000 students named as semifinalists nationwide and now have the opportunity to compete for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships worth about $36 million.
Selection was based upon the Preliminary SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for 2011, which was taken when the students were juniors. About 1.5 million students compete in the program each year.
A third Community School senior, Kelly Hennessy, was named a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student. Hennessy was among about 34,000 students nationwide selected as commended students, which requires placement in the top 5 percent of students competing.
