BCHA seats still vacant

Residents have trouble committing

Affordable housing is a hot-button issue in the valley, but the Blaine County Housing Authority is having trouble finding residents willing to take it on.

The authority is seeking to fill two vacancies on its board: the Sun Valley seat vacated by Milt Adam and the Hailey position formerly filled by Anna Mathieu, both terms that have expired.

While one candidate for the Sun Valley vacancy has been found, housing authority Executive Director Kathy Grotto said many people had been approached who were unable to commit.

"It's a volunteer position and it involves more work than showing up at a monthly meeting," Grotto said. "People that are involved and care about things tend not to have a whole lot of time."

Projects for the board will include development of a five-year strategic plan, as well as a transportation plan.

Grotto said filling the Hailey vacancy is proving just as difficult. She said she's seen no interest in the position so far, though she had hopes to have the position filled "yesterday."

Authority board members are nominated by the municipalities and must be approved by the county commissioners before starting their five-year terms.
