Bighorn poacher loses hunting privileges

Nampa man also sentenced to 6 months in jail

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game reported last week that a 21-year-old Nampa man has lost his Idaho hunting privileges for life for poaching a bighorn sheep in Owyhee County in February.

Jake B. Fouts was also sentenced to 180 days in jail, ordered to pay $2,900 in court costs, civil penalties and restitution and placed on probation for five years. In addition, according to a Fish and Game news release, his fishing and trapping rights in Idaho were suspended for five years.

Sentence was pronounced in September by 3rd District Court Judge Gregory Cutlet. According to Owyhee County court records, Fouts pleaded guilty in August to a felony charge of killing, possessing of and wasting wildlife with a value in excess of $1,000.

Fish and Game reported that Fouts was prosecuted for killing a ewe California bighorn sheep in the Hemingway Butte area of Owyhee County in the southwest corner of Idaho on Feb. 21.

Fouts was arrested leaving the area on state Highway 45 after an eyewitness contacted the Owyhee County Sheriff's Office, which relayed the information to Fish and Game.
