Carey hosts Northside volleyball Saturday

Post-season is here for spikers

Reigning State 1A Division 2 champion Camas County of Fairfield and defending Northside Conference tournament champion Dietrich are the favored teams for the eight-team 2010 Northside tournament beginning Saturday, Oct. 16 at Carey High School.

Powered by junior hitter Katelyn Peterson, Camas is the top seed for the eight-team, four-day tournament that determines two automatic Northside qualifiers for the eight-team State 1A Division 2 meet Oct. 29-30 at Burley.

And the third-place team in the upcoming tournament must win its Oct. 23 play-in match at American Falls for a ticket to the 1A state tourney.

Saturday's first-round schedule at Carey's gym begins at 3 p.m. with #1-seeded Camas playing the #8-seeded team, followed in succession by #4 vs. #5 seeds, the #3 vs. #6 seeds, and #2 vs. #7 seeds. Matches continue Monday and Tuesday at 4 p.m. with the finals Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.

Tournament host Carey (4-11, 3-9 league) gears up by celebrating its "Senior Night" honoring Dani Hennefer and Lorene Andrews Thursday, Oct. 14 with home matches against Richfield. Visiting Carey dropped a 25-17, 25-14, 25-13 Northside match to Lighthouse Christian Friday.

The Community School (2-11, 2-10 league) hosted Lighthouse Tuesday and goes to Camas Thursday.

Other teams in the upcoming Northside meet are Murtaugh and Castleford.

Great Basin VB is Monday

Regular-season champ Twin Falls (33-5, 8-0 league) hosts the six-team Great Basin Conference volleyball tournament starting Monday, Oct. 18. Two GBC teams will earn berths in the eight-team State 4A tournament Oct. 29-30 at Kimberly.
