The National Newspaper Association, the largest newspaper association in the United States, formally recognized the Idaho Mountain Express on Saturday, Oct. 2, as one of the premier community newspapers in the country.
At its annual conference in Omaha, Neb., the NNA gave the Express a second-place award in the Best Local News Coverage category in the 2010 Better Newspapers Contest. The contest judged work done in 2009.
In the Best Local News Coverage category, the NNA's judges reviewed two entire issues of the competing newspapers and compared them to others from across the nation. The Express competed with non-daily newspapers nationwide with a circulation of 10,000 or more.
The award was first announced in July but was not given out until the conference. The Examiner, in Beaumont, Texas, won first place in the category. The Rio Grande Sun, in Espanola, N.M., took third.
Established in 1885, the NNA represents owners, publishers and editors of about 2,700 community newspapers in the United States.
