"Willie's Run" set for Oct. 23 as a senior project

As his senior project, Wood River High School senior Brandon Wade is hosting a charity 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) running and walking race called "Willie's Run for the Environment" on Saturday, Oct. 23 at Hulen Meadows Park three miles north of Ketchum.

Wade said, "Willie Neal was a 19-year-old young man filled with a passion for life, for skiing, and for the world. He was very interested in environmental issues, including climate change. While in high school, he started two local non-profits with the mission of community education, increasing awareness of climate change issues, and promoting environmental initiatives.

"On June 21, 2009, while roller-ski training in Maine, Willie was struck by a car and killed. In his life, and in his death, he inspired and continues to inspire family, friends, and those he never met. The Willie Neal Environmental Awareness Fund was created in an effort to continue Willie's legacy for his passion and inspiration on environmental issues through education and community involvement."
