This coming weekend, Oct. 1-5, the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club will send 16 skaters to Boise to the annual regional qualifying and nonqualifying figure skating championships.
It is the largest team to represent Sun Valley at the regional competitions in many years. Northwest Pacific region includes skaters from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.
Shayna Moellenberg, Nicole Pratt, and Alexandra Harten will represent Sun Valley at qualifying levels in the 2011 Northwest Pacific Regional Championships.
Moellenberg, Sun Valley's highest level competitor, faces eight of the region's best Junior Ladies Free Skaters. Pratt's formidable group includes 19 Novice Ladies Free Skaters.
If Moellenberg or Pratt's combined long and short program scores place them in the top four in their competitive levels, they qualify to compete in the Sectional Championships and earn a chance to go to the U. S. Championships.
Harten's Intermediate Ladies Freeskate level has drawn 33 of the region's best Intermediate free skaters. Due to the size of the Intermediate Ladies group, Harten must place in the top six of the 17-skater qualifying round, then she must medal with her combined long and short program against the top 12 survivors to qualify for Junior Nationals.
Nonqualifying Competition at NWP Regionals takes place in Boise simultaneously with the Regional Championships. It offers Non-Test through Open Juvenile level events.
This year, Caitlin Scholtis is Sun Valley's highest level skater in the Non Qualifying Competition. Caitlin will compete in Open Juvenile Girls.
Arizona Semones and Tara Ware will compete in Preliminary Girls. Isabella Bourret will be in Pre-Preliminary Girls with Axel. Emma Stuessi is entered in Pre-Preliminary Girls without Axel.
Travis Flynt will compete in Pre-Preliminary Boys with Axel. In addition, Blair Baker, Samantha Bunting, Blake Letourneau, Lane Letourneau, Katie Peters, Claire Stickney and Alex Stuessi will compete in Non-Test Girls.
Moellenberg's coach is Lisa-Marie Allen, with choreography by Gia Guddat and Joel Dear. Harten, Semones and the Stuessis are coached by Holly Wheeler, with choreography by Gia Guddat. Darlin Baker coaches and choreographs for Pratt, Sholtis, Ware, Bourret, Flynt, Baker, Bunting, Peters, Stickney, and the Letourneaus.
Two Sun Valley ice dancers also join the competition team. Abby Chase and Chloe Lewis will travel to Culver City to compete in Juvenile Dance Nov. 9-13. Chase is coached by Allen, and Lewis by Judy Blumberg. Both girls also train with non-resident coaches.
