On a sunny, hot afternoon near Boise, 34 Wood River High School cross-country runners were in the field of 2,427 middle school to college-aged footracers for Saturday's Bob Firman Invitational meet at Eagle Island State Park.
Wood River senior Andrew Pfeiffer (16:32) had the best result with a fifth place out of 247 runners in the Boys' Division 1 varsity 3.1-miler. Highland of Pocatello junior Dallin Farnsworth (15:25) was the overall winner with the third-best time ever.
Pfeiffer led the Wood River boys to ninth place out of 32 schools. In the boys' junior varsity team standings, Wood River was 11th of 17.
Junior Corrine Smith of Wood River (21:19) was the top girls' varsity runner for coaches Monte Brothwell and Shari Kunz. The overall girls' high school champion was Katie Knight of Spokane's North Central High School (18:02).
Wood River had some excellent time improvements over last year's Bob Firman. They included Jake Adicoff 4:30, Walker Royston 1:34, Corrine Smith 1:15, Andrew Pfeiffer 1:10, Ben Stout 0:46, Drew Deffe 0:46, Brooke Lawrence 0:35, Miles Hendrix 0:17 and Alison Town 0:04.
Former Wood River High School runner Ashley Rendahl, a senior at Nampa's Northwest Nazarene College was 34th of 63 Women's University runners at 20:33. There were 117 college runners in the field.
