2 wolves killed near Stanley

Federal Wildlife Services killed two wolves near Stanley last week, shooting one from the ground and trapping and shooting another.

The wolves had been involved in repeated depredations in the area, said spokeswoman Lyndsay Cole, and were responsible for the death of a calf on Sept. 7. Wildlife Services employees shot one wolf on Sept. 13 and the other on Sept. 16. They also trapped and collared a third wolf for monitoring on Sept. 13.

Cole said evidence of the wolves' involvement in the calf's death was definitive.

"They only take wolves when they can definitively tell not only that a wolf did it, but which wolf," Cole said. "They can trace it to the exact animal."

"We go out there and play CSI," said Todd Grimm, Western District supervisor for the Idaho Wildlife Services program.

Grimm said the wolves were found in the territory of the former Galena pack, though he said he believes that pack was broken up last fall. One of the wolves removed was a collared female wolf that had been in the area since 2003.

Though Grimm said there were other wolves in the pack and the pack definitely contained pups, he was certain the pups did not belong to either of the wolves killed by Wildlife Services.

"She was an old wolf," he said.
